Record Bids at Auction for Art Works, Equipments, Photographs and Paintings
Record Prices Paid for Photographs at Auction
These photographs both look and are almost priceless:
They have fetched hundreds and thousands –
if not millions – of dollars at auction;
The most expensive old photograph was "The Great Wave" by Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) and sold for more than $800,000 in 1999
The photograph was taken in 1857,
in the days where camera and photo equipment was very crude.
Gustav created a photo that, even if judged by today’s standards, would be considered a wonder.
At that time photography could not reproduce the color blue.
Gustav photographed the sky in the late afternoon. Then again, using a different negative, the sea
and land. Later, he combined the two different negatives to create a perfect image.
The price of $800,000 for a photograph has since then been beaten by
"Cowboy" by Richard Prince which sold for over a $1,000,000 at Christie's auction in 2005 and
"The Pond Moonlight" by Edward Steichen which sold for just under $3,000,000 in 2006.
The most expensive camera was a prototype Phantom photographic outfit sold for over $200,000 on 16 January 2001 at Christie's London UK .
This would be beaten by a Leica that fetched 800,000 Euros at auction,
but I could not find any confirmation or further info?
The world’s most expensive painting --- so far
This record is currently held by Pablo Picasso’s painting "Boy with a pipe",
which sold for over one hundred million dollars in May 2004 at Sotheby's.
The heaviest (if not the most expensive) book.
